dundee-unitedMichael Marra, our talented music student, Aoife McGuigan-O’Brien and a number of teachers from St John’s performed ‘Hamish the Goalie’ at Dundee United’s centenary celebrations in June 2009. It was from this that St John’s relationship with United grew and with their support our forthcoming project to re-record and release ‘Hamish the Goalie’ will take place in the Spring of 2010.

Dundee United Director Derek Robertson added the Club’s support for the project, “Dundee United is delighted to be associated with such an exciting project as the Community Enterprise Project. The Club celebrates its centenary this season and although over the last century Dundee United has, like Lochee, evolved considerably, its roots as Dundee Hibernian can be traced back to the Dundee Irish community, most of whom were located in Lochee in the early part of the 20th century and who take such an integral place in Lochee’s rich tapestry.

Hamish the Goalie is a perfect song to choose for this project, imortalising an all time Dundee United great and local hero Hamish McAlpine, plus a royal visit – with a touch of Hollywood glamour – to Tannadice in 1981. It’s composer, Michael Marra, includes this inspirational line “Hamish stokes young men’s dreams into a burning flame” and we are sure that this project, as a whole, will inspire St Johns pupils to achieve their goals and ambitions in life.”
